    Good enough for my use

These earphones are good enough to block out most noise, like a busy road outside a room or low noise. I can still notice louder talking or music. But these are good for watching a movie on my laptop and or listening to music while I work. They're comfortable with the padding too.

    Not comfortable to wear

Bought these for my wife, however she found them too uncomfortable to wear. I also tried them on and agreed. As a result really cant advise whether technically they are any good.as we have not used them since. Very disappointing for a name brand. I would not recommend these to others.

At a glance

The Sony MDR-ZX110NC is a budget-friendly wired headphone with battery-powered noise cancelling, aimed at commuters, students and casual listeners who want a simpler alternative to wireless models. Its key strengths are easy portability, long noise-cancelling battery life and dependable everyday sound. The main limitation is that its on-ear fit and basic tuning are less immersive and refined than premium over-ear headphones.

Things to consider

Compared with premium over-ear or studio-focused headphones, the on-ear design offers less isolation, comfort for long sessions and overall sound refinement.

Studio use suitability

Limited - fine for casual monitoring, but not ideal for critical mixing, mastering or long professional sessions.

Commuter friendliness

8/10 - lightweight, foldable and useful for reducing constant transport noise, though the on-ear fit is less isolating than larger over-ear models.

Audio quality score

6.5/10 - solid everyday sound for the price, but not as spacious, detailed or balanced as more premium headphones.

Durability vs portability

Leans toward portability - easy to carry and travel-friendly, with a lighter build that prioritises convenience over heavy-duty ruggedness.

Key benefits

  • Noise Cancelling: Helps reduce steady background sounds so music and podcasts are easier to hear on trains, buses and flights.
  • Wired Connection: Simple plug-in listening avoids Bluetooth pairing issues and keeps audio available even when your device battery is low.
  • Lightweight Build: Easier to carry in a bag and more comfortable for everyday portable use than heavier full-size headphones.
  • Foldable Design: Packs down more neatly for commuting, travel and storage between uses.
  • Long Battery Life for Noise Cancelling: Up to about 80 hours of NC use means less frequent battery changes for regular travel and daily listening.
  • Closed On-Ear Style: Provides a more private listening experience than open designs and helps limit sound leakage in shared spaces.
  • Everyday Sony Sound Tuning: Delivers a clear, easy-listening sound profile suited to mainstream music, videos and spoken-word content.
  • Battery-Free Playback Option: Headphones still work as standard wired headphones even if the noise-cancelling battery runs flat.

Q: Are the Sony MDR-ZX110NC actually noise cancelling, or do they just block sound physically?

A: Yes. The MDR-ZX110NC uses active noise cancelling, not just the ear pads to reduce outside sound. It works best on steady low-frequency noise like aircraft, bus or train rumble, and is less effective on voices or sudden sharp sounds.

Q: Do the Sony MDR-ZX110NC headphones have a microphone for phone or video calls?

A: No. The MDR-ZX110NC is built mainly for wired listening with noise cancelling, rather than hands-free calling. If calls are important, a headset or Bluetooth model with an in-built microphone will be a better fit for everyday use.

Q: Can the Sony MDR-ZX110NC still play music if the noise cancelling battery runs flat?

A: Yes. Audio is delivered through the cable, while the battery powers the active noise cancelling circuit. If the battery runs flat, they can still work as standard wired headphones, but more background noise will come through.

Q: Are the Sony MDR-ZX110NC a good choice for commuting or flights?

A: They can suit commuting and occasional flights if the goal is reducing constant travel noise without moving to a bulkier premium model. The trade-off is a wired connection and simpler noise cancelling than newer wireless headphones.

Q: Do the Sony MDR-ZX110NC use Bluetooth, or are they cable only?

A: No. The MDR-ZX110NC is a wired headphone model, so it does not pair by Bluetooth like Sony's wireless ranges. It suits buyers who prefer a simple cable connection, but not those wanting cable-free listening from a phone.

Q: Are the Sony MDR-ZX110NC full-size over-ear headphones?

A: No. The MDR-ZX110NC uses a compact on-ear design rather than large around-ear cups. That makes them easier to carry, but they may feel less roomy and offer less passive isolation than bigger over-ear travel headphones.
